Pipe Springs

Our trip was supposed to be a camping outing, but we left late in the day and wanted to get all the way down to southern Utah before calling it quits.  We missed check-in for the campsite and so we just stopped at the nearest tiny hotel we saw.  Turned out to be a bit scary but still, it was clean and it had a shower and a bed so I was happy.

Stop #1 was the Pipe Springs fort.  It was an amazing safe zone that in its day was a good 100 miles from the nearest sign of civilization.  Brigham Young set it up as a milk and cheese mission to feed those who were building the St. George temple.  It was so far away because they had to graze an enourmous number of cattle.

My favorite part.  This stove is stunning and I wish I had one just like it.  For show anyway.

The girls got a kick out of the mustache cup.  I think you can see why it was named such.

This post was the first in Utah to have the telegraph.  The white and red sign says Deseret Telegraph and the wires follow the wooden posts to outside the fort.  It was originally run by a 16 year old girl who had come seeking employment.  Well, her father worried too much for her safety and had her return home.  After that it was the family's job.

I look at how beautiful and yet simple the lives of these pioneers were and I am amazed.  It feels so peaceful and genteel even in the midst of the empty desert.
